Innsbruck, Austria

Innsbruck is the capital of the Tyrol and the nearest major city to much of the best skiing in Austria.

The city is, as its name suggests, situated on the Inn river at the base of the Wipp valley, which leads south to the Brenner pass and Italy. The Inn valley motorway, with its connections to Germany, Italy and the rest of Austria, heads off to the east and the west.



Innsbruck airport lies on the west side of the city about four kilometres from the centre and offers a wide range of scheduled and charter ski flights.

Accommodation is available in the city or in the outlying villages - the small local areas are included on the Innsbruck area ski pass, while other passes are available which give access to the glacier in the Stubai valley and the option of a day excursion to bigger resorts.

The city is attractive to parties with non-skiers - there is plenty of history to soak up and the atmosphere is a young and active one, with a large university population enthusiastically taking advantage of the surrounding outdoor activities.
